To our Albion family:
We are writing to share some important news: Dr. Mauri A. Ditzler has informed the Board of Trustees he plans to retire from his role as President of Albion College at the end of the 2019-20 academic year.
Mauri has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education spanning more than four decades, the past six leading our beloved College. He shared with us that it is now time to step back from day-to-day leadership to spend more time on two key priorities: his dear wife, Judi, and his lifelong love of farming. He has graciously accepted our offer to lead a number of special projects over the coming two years, including working hand-in-hand with our development team to ensure a successful completion of the comprehensive campaign, ensuring strong ties to the local community are maintained and acting as an envoy for the College and community regionally and nationally.
Mauri’s impact on our campus has been nothing short of transformational. First and foremost, he has strengthened relationships with faculty, staff, students and alumni, which created a renewed sense of engagement on – and beyond – campus. Under his leadership, Albion has enhanced recruiting initiatives that have led to sustained enrollment growth. We have raised nearly $100 million – and are now within $14 million of the goal announced last month – for the comprehensive campaign to fund new programs, capital projects and scholarships. Mauri has led the charge to expand academic programs, enhance diversity and inclusion initiatives and partnered with the community on the redevelopment of downtown Albion, among a host of other key accomplishments.
We are beyond grateful to Mauri for sharing his wisdom, passion and leadership that allowed Albion College to achieve such extraordinary results as President. When he first interviewed for this post, he shared that our mission – to prepare students to translate critical thought into action through a liberal arts education – and our strategic plan resonated with him. They also guided his actions throughout his tenure.
Our mission as a College remains unchanged. So does our commitment to the community of Albion, which is beginning its own exciting transformation through community-wide redevelopment and re-engagement initiatives. As we begin our search for the 17th President of Albion College, our goal is to find a leader who shares the vision we have established and will build on the many campus and community successes achieved during Mauri’s time here.
We are working to establish a committee to lead a national search to select and welcome a new President next summer. We hope to have the Presidential Search Committee in place before the upcoming Christmas break. In addition to trustees, the Committee will consist of faculty, staff, alumni, community members and a student to ensure broad representation in the process. Should the ideal candidate not be found before Mauri’s planned retirement date of July 1, 2020, he has indicated his willingness to stay on in the role of President until the successful completion of our search.
We pledge to keep the campus community updated regularly as our search continues.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Mauri Ditzler for all that he has done – and will continue to do – to enrich and to improve Albion College. We also want to thank his very patient wife, Judi, and his lovely family for their gracious “loan” of their husband and father to us. We are all the richer for having had Mauri on this journey with us for the past several years and look forward to helping him celebrate a well-deserved retirement that will still allow him to be connected to Albion College.
