Baldwin Hall Renovation: A New Dining Experience in Fall 2013

Baldwin

Next fall, Albion College students will have an entirely new dining experience in Baldwin Hall, thanks to renovations slated to begin in March 2013.

"We intend to make Lower Baldwin Dining Hall a distinctive, restaurant-quality destination that's attractive to the entire campus community," said Todd Tekiele, the College's director of auxiliary services. "Enhancing the dining experience for our students is the primary goal."

Beginning May 13, Baldwin Hall will be entirely closed for renovation. Summer programs, camps and conferences will continue without interruption in alternative locations. The project completion date is Aug. 2.

Legacy Stories: Baird Family Dedicates Student Farm Growhouse

The Albion College Student Farm dedicated its new hoop house October 27. The crowd included the family of Linda and Rich Baird, '78, who presented the Good Soil Growhouse in honor of daughter Jessie Baird, '11, one of the Student Farm founders.

"Jessie didn't want a graduation trip, she didn't want money, she didn't want a party," said Rich. "She just wanted this thing, to help the farm continue. I'm so glad we were able to give this gift for her."

The Fiscal Cliff & Charitable Gifts to Albion

As we know from daily media reports, the Obama administration and Congress are looking for ways to avert the "fiscal cliff"—the combination of automatic spending cuts and expiring tax cuts set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 – which means higher taxes across the board. Proposals that limit or cap itemized deductions, including the charitable deduction, are under consideration and could be part of a short-term move to avert the fiscal cliff by Dec. 31, 2012 or a long-term comprehensive tax reform effort in 2013.

If you are considering end-of-year giving options, please contact Albion College's Development Office if we can help you or your advisors. Note that checks postmarked by December 31, or credit card gifts made prior to midnight EST, December 31, 2012, will be credited in the 2012 tax year.

Baldwin

Piece by piece, and using leftover yard signs from professor of chemistry Andy French’s mayoral campaign, Albion College students assembled a spherical Running For Office Twenty Twelve sculpture using George Hart’s geometry-based schematics.

“I enjoy showing people a different side of mathematics,” Hart says. “It is always fun to build something with a group of people.”

Karen Kline, '83

"When the boys were growing up, sharing memories and stories of Albion was pretty common with five graduates in the family. Neither of the boys applied anywhere else. They only considered Albion."
