Dr. Carrie Booth Walling is a political scientist with interests in human rights, international security, and the prevention and punishment of mass atrocity crimes. Her current research focuses on the influence of human rights on United Nations Security Council decision-making and how victims of human rights violations gain access to justice. Walling is completing a book with Routledge Press titled, Human Rights and Dignity for All: Examining Rights Claims in America and Around the World.
Dr. Walling is passionate about research and loves to involve students in her work through the Student Research Partnership (SRP) program, the Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (FURSCA) grants, and her own research funding. One of the things she loves most about Honors is collaborating with students from all disciplines, majors, and programs across campus on their own research. Walling offers mentoring support to ALL students pursuing an undergraduate thesis, helping them to graduate with Albion College Honors or Departmental Honors. She offers HSP 397: Thesis Development Colloquy every semester and also teaches an Honors course on The Politics of Genocide.
Dr. Walling earned her B.A. in International Relations from James Madison College, Michigan State University. She has a MScEon degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. Walling earned her Ph.D. in Political Science with a Human Rights minor from the University of Minnesota and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy. She is a Security Fellow with the Truman National Security Project, a certified instructor with the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program which brings together Albion College students and incarcerated men for a semester-long course held behind the prison walls, and Board Chair of Unity in Diversity, an interfaith coalition which builds bridges of understanding among diverse cultures, nationalities, races, generations and genders. Walling is author of All Necessary Measures: The United Nations and Humanitarian Intervention and has authored journal articles on human rights, humanitarian intervention and transitional justice.
Walling loves to hike and play strategy games with her family — Dayne, Bennett and Emery.
