Geology Students Take Best Poster Award at National Meeting

Sartin Best Student Poster Award at the 2011 Geological Society of America annual meeting held last month in Minneapolis. Their poster was part of the undergraduate research session sponsored by Sigma Gamma Epsilon, a national earth sciences honorary society.

Abby Williams ’12 and Aaron Hiday ’13 won the Austin A. Sartin Best Student Poster Award at the 2011 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN.  Their poster, titled “Assessment of diel cycling in agricultural stream in south-central Michigan- a focus on turbidity”, was part of the undergraduate research session sponsored by Sigma Gamma Epsilon, a national earth sciences honorary society.

Julie Brigham-Grette ‘77 is recipient of UMass’ Conti Faculty Fellowship Award for 2011-12

Professor Julie Brigham-Grette is one of three recipients of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Samuel F. Conti Faculty Fellowship Awards for 2011-12, which consist of a cash award of $3,000 and a year's leave of absence to encourage award recipients to concentrate on activities related to graduate education, research, creative work and scholarly attainment. 

Lisa Colville '07 published Greenland climate research in Science

In a July 30, 2011 paper in the journal Science, Lisa Colville '07 et al. contend that Greenland was only partially deglaciated during the last interglacial time, 125,000 years ago. Lisa's paper , titled "Sr-Nd-Pb isotope evidence for ice-sheet presence on southern Greenland during the last interglacial" was a product of her M.S. thesis at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was co-authored by her advisor and other collaborators. Lisa graduated with a B.A. in Geology from  Albion College in 2007.
