The Writing Center supports the entire college community. Peer consultants work one-on-one with student writers at every stage of the writing process—from initial brainstorming to writing drafts, and from organizing ideas to final editing. Consultants help students with writing taught in different academic disciplines, as well as other kinds of writing they might need to do while at college (e.g., cover letters for internships, résumés for job applications, personal statements for scholarships or graduate school). In addition, the director of Writing, in consultation with the individual student, may plan a program of writing practice to meet the student's needs.
The Writing Center is a teaching and learning workplace (not a "fix-it" shop or an editing service). We provide both appointment and drop-in writing consulting. Long-term, the Writing Center's mission is to help students become independent learners and writers, building their confidence and helping them develop writing tools for learning on their own.
For Fall 2020, we are open for business — all online. We will have regularly scheduled "live" Google Meet video chat hours for students to drop in or make appointments, plus asynchronous writing feedback available using GoogleDocs, email and similar technology.
Live Google Meet hours will mostly be in the evening and the schedule will will be announced during the first week of classes. Asynchronous writing feedback will be available 24/7, though responses will generally take at least a few hours.
