Albion College student Molly Hancock, '18, in Germany
Molly Hancock could have enrolled at Albion College, in her words, as a “a non-athletic regular person.” The first-year student from Midland didn't play soccer her senior year in high school, but she decided to pursue it again after her spring Albion orientation, and she has scored three goals while starting in eight of the Britons' first 13 matches. Her overall goal is medical school, but the biochemistry major and Spanish minor already fulfilled another one—international travel—through her First-Year Seminar's trip to Frankfurt and Heidelberg, Germany, during fall break.

One important lesson Sara Sample, '15, learned in France was the importance of history to 21st-century sustainability. "We went out with landscape scientists to look at the landscapes and guess why things were where they were," Sample recalled. "For instance, we looked at an old hunting ground that had high hedges and saw that the hedges were there because of the pheasant hunting that used to go on in these places."

College's Ties with French Sister City Earn National Simon Award

The innovative relationship between Albion College, the City of Albion and two communities in France made a big impression on the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA), which has honored Albion College with a 2014 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. "As a French professor, it is most gratifying to see how these international partnerships have transformed the lives of students and colleagues across disciplines," said Dianne Guenin-Lelle, co-president of Albion's Sister City Committee and the College's 2012-2013 Year of Global Diversity.

"Studying at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, I walk past the Guggenheim Museum every day, as well as other beautiful buildings and outdoor artwork," the senior Spanish major writes. "I go places only a local can show me, and with living in nearby Getxo, I'm able to get to know two cities. I'm so thankful for this experience."
