"By any objective standard it ranks among the most significant passages in modern history," writes Christopher Hagerman, associate professor of European history at Albion College, about World War I, also known as the Great War. "The last of Europe's Great Powers plunged toward war one hundred years ago," on August 3, 1914.
Miriam Winter, a child survivor of the Holocaust in Poland who received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Albion College at 2009 Commencement, passed away July 19. "She inspired many at Albion College to think and feel deeply as well as act effectively in defense of those values that make for a humane society," history professor Geoffrey Cocks said.
"Those of us of age in 1964," writes the Albion College history professor, "remember when we heard the news that three civil rights workers—Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman—had gone missing as Freedom Summer was just under way. June 21 marks the 50th anniversary of the shocking news."
Two of Albion College's longest-tenured faculty members—Wesley Dick, professor of U.S. history, and Geoffrey Cocks, professor of European history—share their thoughts about one of the most pivotal moments of World War II.
