Hilo to Honolulu: First-Year Students Study Hawaiian Culture, Education

January isn't so cold for several Albion College students who took education professor Suellyn Henke's first-year seminar "Mauka and Makai: A Sense of Place and Education in Hawai’i." Five students (along with upperclass mentor Elaine Starkey and registrar Drew Dunham) toured parts of Hilo and Oahu, visiting a school, national parks, and other places, learning about Hawaiian culture and educational opportunities offered by the unique community and environment.

Education Students Present Capstone Symposium
Albion College education students presented their insights, from research and practicum experience, at the Education Department's 2012 Capstone Symposium on Teaching, Friday, April 13, in Olin Hall.
The Symposium featured presentations by students who traveled to Albion's sister city of Noisy-le-Roi, France, to do a comparative study on education systems; integrated science students who designed and developed inquiry-based curriculum materials; and students completing student-teaching experiences.

Albion College's Teacher Education Program Scores High Marks
Albion College's Teacher Education Program recently received an Exemplary rating and a perfect 70 Teacher Preparation Institution score from the Michigan Department of Education. "The Exemplary rank actually reflects the liberal arts nature of our program," said Kyle Shanton (left), associate professor and department chair.
The department also received a five-year accreditation from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.

Moritz's Ceramic Tiles on Display at ArtPrize
A ceramics class for Albion College staff members last fall gave Jason Moritz an opportunity to connect with experiences of growing up in the Midwest as the son of a talented painter and formerly living in Los Angeles. But he never expected to create pieces worthy of display in a show as large as ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.
The Certification Officer in the Education Department and Fritz Shurmur Center for Teacher Development at Albion, Moritz created ceramic tiles depicting scenes of southern California, collectively titled Smoggy Sunsets over Blue Palms, Los Angeles, 1998-2007. The tiles will be on display at Kate Lewis’ studio during the show, which runs from Sept. 21-Oct. 9.
