Lewis' 'Game-Like' Mobile App Helps Teach Chemical Bonding

A new app developed by Albion College chemistry professor Lisa Lewis that enables students to become more familiar with chemical-bonding concepts recently was launched July 24 in the Apple App Store. The program, Chemical Valence, has a "game-like" interface, she told Campus Technology magazine, "where students can play with fundamental concepts in chemical bonding." It's the second app effort for Lewis, who in 2012 created one focused on strong acids and strong bases. Read more on campustechnology.com

"You have to push it, rather than throw it," says Josh Hall, '14, of a spear-throwing lesson he recently had with Maasai Moran in Kenya. Discovering a new talent was an unexpected bonus for Hall, who is spending the spring 2014 semester in Africa, learning Swahili and studying wildlife management, wildlife ecology and environmental policy.

Chemistry and mathematics major Stephanie Sanders, ’15, was recently awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for Excellence in Education for the 2014-15 academic year. She is one of 286 science, mathematics and engineering students selected from among 1,166 applicants nationally and one of just six from Michigan.

"The most rewarding part of my summer research was being part of a team that is finding a new paradigm that could improve biosensing dramatically," writes the senior chemistry major about his National Science Foundation–Research Experience for Undergraduates internship at the University of Cincinnati. "There's still a lot to do before we can perform biosensing that is disease-specific. At the end of the day, though, I know that this research may break ground in the field."
