To paraphrase an old saying, Annika Markovich’s summer is water to drink—but that’s about it. “We get only one freshwater shower a week and there are no laundry machines, so everything is washed with salt water from the ocean," the senior biology major says. "It was a large adjustment, but I got used to it. It is just a very different lifestyle than the one we live in the States.”
On the field, Molly Hancock is fast. And endurance makes the Midland, Mich., native an effective forward for the Albion College women's soccer team, too. In sitting across from Hancock, it doesn't take long to realize her mind works much like it does when she's in training or competition. This past summer, however, the biology major had to train her mind to work in a linear fashion as a summer undergraduate research assistant in James Rae's lab at the University of Michigan.
Kiehl Smith arrived at Albion last fall thinking he would pursue an education track en route to teaching social studies one day. That is until, in the liberal arts tradition, a meeting with biology professor Dale Kennedy rekindled Smith's passion for ornithology, the study of birds.
Kylie Heitman, '17, has been a horse lover and rider since she was five and she has long dealt with the stress many horses experience when their daily routine is interrupted. Specifically, she wanted to know if an essential oil, in this case lavender, when diffused into the air could reduce stress in horses by suppressing their heart rates and cortisol levels.
