Equestrian Program Expands Over Summer Break

In order to make necessary structural repairs and increase the size of the riding space - as well as to allow Albion to host larger shows for both students and outside competitors – the existing Randi C. Heathman Indoor Arena was torn down in early May and a newer, expanded structure is taking its place. Slated for completion in time for students to begin using it when the fall semester opens, the new indoor arena will span 150’ by 420’ and offer a riding surface of 125’ by 410’. It will also offer increased seating for spectators, as well as upgraded footing and lighting.

The increased size of the indoor arena will bring Albion's three intercollegiate equestrian teams – hunt seat, western, and dressage – together at the Held Equestrian Center for the first time since the program was formed in 2004. It will also allow the College to once more host home meets for each team in the 2016-2017 season, as well as additional competitions for high school riders and for regional competitors from throughout Michigan and beyond. Increased facilities and the growth of the program also necessitate the addition of more staff and horses to the Albion equestrian program; candidates who wish to apply for open positions may visit the College’s job postings and those who wish for more information about how to donate a horse can fill out a prospective horse donation form online.

The official unveiling of Albion’s finished indoor arena is slated to coincide with Homecoming 2016 on October 14 and 15 but prospective students and their families are invited to visit both campus and the Held Equestrian Center all summer long. Schedule your tour today!
